In the north-west of Tasmania, a police officer was unfortunately killed during a shooting encounter. On Monday at approximately 11am, police officers went to a residential property on Allison Road in North Motton for routine duties. It was there that a member of the public fired a shot at an officer as they approached the house.
Following this, another officer fired at the alleged offender, who then surrendered to the authorities.
North Motton, a small township of around 400 people, is situated 28 kilometers west of Devonport.
Despite the tragic incident, there is no ongoing threat to the public and police have stated that they are providing wellbeing support to those who have been affected. They have also emphasized that a full professional standards investigation is underway. The coroner was notified and is currently attending the scene.
We offer our deepest condolences to the police officer’s family and colleagues during this difficult time.
