Erin Patterson took the stand as the first defense witness in her own triple murder trial. She is represented by Colin Mandy SC, her defense lawyer. Patterson, who is 50 years old, is facing charges of murder and attempted murder in relation to poisoning her four lunch guests, who were relatives of her estranged husband, Simon Patterson. The incident occurred on July 29, 2023, when Patterson served a beef wellington at her house in Leongatha. She has pleaded not guilty to the murders of Simon’s parents, Don and Gail Patterson, his aunt Heather Wilkinson, and the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson, Simon’s uncle and Heather’s husband. Her lawyers contend that the poisonings were a tragic and terrible accident. Det Leading Sen Const Stephen Eppingstall, the officer in charge of the investigation, completed his evidence earlier in the day. He served as the final prosecution witness in the trial.
