A man has been apprehended in Sydney’s eastern suburbs following a high-speed pursuit, during which police fired shots at his stolen Audi vehicle.
Initially, police officers in Bondi began trailing a suspicious dark-colored Audi A1 around 4 a.m. The chase, however, was eventually called off due to the vehicle’s excessive speed. Not long after, the stolen car was spotted again on Sir Thomas Mitchell Road in Bondi.
As an officer approached the vehicle on foot, the car allegedly accelerated towards him, prompting the officer to discharge his firearm. The vehicle then collided with a police car and drove away, but neither of the officers at the scene was injured.
A member of the public later spotted the vehicle in North Bondi at 6:30 a.m., and shortly after, a 37-year-old man, who is known to the police, was taken into custody. Although the man was transported to the hospital for evaluation, no physical injuries have been reported.
Further checks revealed that the vehicle had been stolen from Double Bay on Friday night. Regarding the officer’s decision to fire a gun, authorities will review the incident to determine the appropriate actions taken during the high-pressure situation.
