The incident occurred when a man was struck by a vehicle and killed while attempting to escape from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers during a raid at a Home Depot in Los Angeles county. The ICE operation took place in Monrovia, a diverse suburb of Los Angeles, with agents spotted at the store prior to 10am local time. A short time later, Monrovia fire and rescue responded to a report of a pedestrian being hit on the 210 freeway, where the man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Monrovia city manager Dylan Feik stated that there is no ongoing ICE activity in the area and issued condolences to the victim and his family. This particular raid was one of several targeting Home Depot locations in southern California, as the stores are known to have day laborers waiting for job opportunities outside. According to State assembly member John Harabedian, who represents the region, 10 people were detained during the operation, but one individual wanted to escape and was tragically struck by a vehicle.
President Donald Trump has been known for his strong stance on immigration, with over 60,000 people in immigration detention in August, breaking records set during his first term. The Trump administration has expanded the federal government’s power to detain and deport, with support from Republican lawmakers who have tripled ICE’s budget. California, which is a sanctuary state that protects immigrant rights, has seen an increase in federal raids, leading to the cancellation of cultural and musical events in addition to widespread fear within immigrant communities.
