The Indonesian ambassador held a meeting with high-ranking Australian diplomats on Tuesday amid discussions of potential Russian military activities in the region. This also follows Anthony Albanese’s accusation that Peter Dutton damaged bilateral relations. The meeting between Indonesia’s ambassador to Australia, Dr. Siswo Pramono, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s deputy secretary, Michelle Chan, is said to be part of a regular series of engagements. However, the details of the discussion are not disclosed, with Daft spokesperson noting the diplomatic practice of not commenting on private conversations. Herbвy Lemahieu of Lowy Institute believes that it is unlikely for Russia not to be a topic during the meeting. The meeting happens amid the ongoing federal election campaign and after a report on Russia allegedly seeking to establish a military base in Indonesia, which Jakarta denies. Canberra has made inquiries about the claims which Indonesia has not confirmed. Other political tensions also arose when Dutton mistakenly attributed the Russian proposal to Indonesia’s president, Prabowo Subianto. During press conferences, Dutton admitted the mistake. Albanese accused Dutton of damaging the relationship with Indonesia with his comments.
