Good morning. Donald Trump’s pick for Washington US attorney, Ed Martin, has repeatedly made racist comments in social media posts and columns, according to The Guardian. Martin, who has been appointed interim US attorney for the District of Columbia and nominated for a permanent position, instructed Georgetown law school to cease any diversity, equity, and inclusion schemes. He also referred to himself as one of “President Trump’s lawyers” rather than an independent officer sworn to uphold the US Constitution.
The comments discovered so far include Martin falsely claiming that Kamala Harris “self-identified” as Black and calling her the new Rachel Dolezal, as well as pushing the false claim that Planned Parenthood targets Black communities for abortions. He also recently falsely claimed that Martin Luther King Jr was a registered Republican.
Elsewhere, as peace talks continue between Ukraine and Russia, Moscow’s defence ministry said Ukraine launched 337 drones at Russia, despite the negotiating teams meeting in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested in Manila thanks to an international criminal court warrant over his so-called “war on drugs”, which has seen as many as 30,000 people killed.
