Whistleblowers alerted senior executives at Vodafone, including the current CEO Margherita Della Valle, about financial distress faced by scores of the company’s franchised store owners nearly two years prior to a high court claim accusing the company of unjustly enriching itself. Vodafone employees consistently raised concerns with superiors about theVer ebbe
nt reduction in commissions being paid to small businesses operating the telecom company’s retail network. This resulted in a group of 62 out of approximately 150 franchise operators filing a legal claim exceeding £120 million last December. The telecommunications company, valued at around £17 billion on the London Stock Exchange, has denied these claims but is participating in a mediation process. This highlights how some Vodafone staff appeared to side with the franchisees against their employer. The drastic cuts to commission rates imposed as the country emerged from the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020 led to franchise owners incurring significant personal debts and risking their livelihoods or homes, with some even reporting suicidal thoughts. Vodafone has issued an apology, stating it has treated franchisees fairly and made efforts to rectify issues. Della Valle, along with two current members of Vodafone’s UK board, Max Taylor and Jon Shaw, were informed of the franchisees’ struggles around the time of her promotion to CEO. Vodafone disputes the term “whistleblower,” emphasizing its open process for raising concerns. According to the franchises, Vodafone acted in bad faith, imposed substantial fines for minor administrative errors, and pressured them into taking out loans and grants to sustain their businesses. Vodafone claims the actual value of the legal claim is £85.5 million and asserts that many franchisees do not support the claim, with 68 of its 83 current franchise partners choosing not to participate in the claim. The telecom company is now involved in mediation with the claimant group, facilitated by an independent mediator agreed upon by both parties.
