An attack by the Israeli forces on a tent camp located within the premises of Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza, resulted in the death of 10 individuals, among whom was a journalist, while numerous others were critically injured as their camp caught fire. Disturbing images and footage captured from the hospital’s courtyard showed desperate efforts to extinguish the blazing tents. One video displayed people shouting as a man attempted to move a flaming piece of furniture, while a journalist named Ahmed Mansour, affiliated with Palestine Today, sat amidst the flames, undergoing severe burns. His colleague, Helmi al-Faqawi, perished in the strike, with at least another nine journalists being wounded, including Mansour and photographer Hassan Aslih, who suffered a head trauma and injuries to his hand.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet security agency claimed that the airstrike aimed to target Aslih, whom they accused of being a member of Hamas and participating in an attack on Israeli towns and kibbutzim on October 7, 2023. Aslih, known for documenting the effects of Israeli attacks on Gaza through his Instagram page with 571,000 followers, had recently posted about the funeral of another journalist, Islam Miqdad, who had been killed in an attack where she was seeking shelter with her young son in western Khan Younis. Miqdad’s mother, Amal Kasheen, insisted on her daughter’s innocence, emphasizing her love and commitment to journalism.
As the conflict continues, last year recorded the highest death toll for journalists with Israel responsible for 70% of the fatalities, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Israel resumed its airstrikes on Gaza following a fragile ceasefire collapse in March, leading to the displacement of an additional 142,000 individuals within six days. Meanwhile, some 59 hostages, including 24 believed to be alive, remain in captivity in Gaza. The Israeli campaign has claimed over 50,000 Palestinian lives in 18 months, with a third of the casualties being children, as reported by the health ministry in Ramallah.
