The Israeli military has advised residents of Gaza against traveling to areas leading to aid distribution sites, following the death of at least 27 Palestinians due to Israeli fire while awaiting food at points established by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The military referred to the roads leading to the distribution centers as “combat zones”. The GHF announced the temporary closure of its distribution points for organizational improvements, with operations to resume the following day. The organization is in discussions with the Israeli military to increase security measures at GHF locations. The United Nations’ human rights chief, Volker Türk, has condemned the lethal attacks on civilians around food distribution as a war crime. These incidents come amid a blockade by Israel on all supplies, which they claim Hamas is misappropriating for its fighters. The GHF has taken over the distribution of aid despite criticism from the UN and other humanitarian organizations, who argue that the new system cannot meet the needs of Gaza’s population and allows Israel to use food as a tool of control. Recently, an evangelical leader and adviser to Donald Trump on interfaith issues, Johnnie Moore, was appointed the new head of the GHF, succeeding Jake Wood who resigned citing concerns over the organization’s independence from Israeli interests.
