Johns Hopkins University has announced plans to cut over 2,000 jobs following the Trump administration’s decision to slash $800m in grants to the prestigious institution. The funding for these positions, provided by the US Agency for International Development, will greatly impact domestic US workers and international positions in 44 countries, making this the largest layoff in the university’s history. The cuts will affect the university’s Bloomberg School of Public Health, its medical school, and its non-profit for international health, Jhpiego. The school of public health includes over 80 research institutions that focus on issues such as gun violence, maternal health, and the economic impacts of Alzheimer’s disease. The announcement comes on the day that hundreds of professors, researchers, and staff rallied in support of American scientists amid government layoffs and cuts to research funding. Johns Hopkins is the largest private employer in Baltimore and Maryland, receiving the most federal research funding. Those affected by the funding cuts will be given 60 days’ notice before layoffs or furloughs. The Trump administration has canceled more than 80% of USAid programs and is investigating several US universities over pro-Palestinian protests.
