John Burton, the late US congressman, was a renowned liberal Democrat from San Francisco who dedicated his life to fighting for the working class and developing the careers of many politicians, including Nancy Pelosi. At 92, Mr. Burton passed away in San Francisco from natural causes.
During his career, Burton served in the California State Assembly and the US House of Representatives, where he focused on environmental conservation and anti-apartheid legislation. He also combated drug addiction and later became the California Democratic Party’s chair from 2009 to 2017.
Not only was Burton a powerful political figure, but he also founded a non-profit organization focused on advocating for the rights of foster youth. This organization, John Burton Advocates for Youth, has been responsible for over 50 legislative reforms to improve the lives of foster care recipients in the US.
Burton’s life and career serve as a reminder of the importance of genuine leadership and standing up for the disadvantaged. Those wishing to pay their respects are encouraged to make donations to John Burton Advocates for Youth in his memory. Plans for a celebration of his life are currently pending.
