Judge Dismisses Legal Attempt to Block Co-Education at Newington College, Ruling “Youth” as Gender-Neutral Term

A student from an expensive private school in Sydney has failed in his legal attempt to prevent the school from becoming coeducational. The student, named only as “student A,” argued that the 1873 trust deed for Newington College specified it was founded to educate “youth,” which the student claimed referred only to boys. However, Justice Guy Parker dismissed this argument, stating that the term “youth” was used in a gender-neutral sense and does not restrict the college to educating only males. The student will likely be ordered to pay legal costs, the amount of which remains undetermined.

The decision to make Newington College coeducational in November 2023 faced resistance from some parents and alumni, with one former student (an “old boy”) expressing his opposition outside the school, stating that he would not enroll his grandson in a coed institution. Another alumnus, Sydney barrister Dallas Morgan, was revealed to have planned to travel to Tonga to lobby King Tupou VI against the coed decision, expressing concerns over the potential for fees to be subsidized for “transgender midgets” and describing opposition to “the evil empire of woke mumbo jumbo.”
