Karen Webb is stepping down as NSW police commissioner after three-year tenure | Australian Police Updates

Karen Webb, the police commissioner of New South Wales, will step down from her position after completing three years in office.

During a statement in the NSW parliament on Wednesday, the NSW police minister, Yasmin Catley, revealed that Webb had announced her intention to retire by the end of the year, with her departure taking effect on September 30.

Minister Catley praised Webb for providing an ample notice period, allowing the government to conduct a comprehensive search for her successor.

Expressing gratitude and admiration for Webb’s illustrious career and outstanding service, Catley noted her significant contributions to police reform and the safety and wellbeing of the New South Wales police force.

As the first woman to hold the commissioner position and the 23rd individual to do so, Webb was sworn in during a ceremony held in her hometown of Boorowa in February 2022.

Her tenure, however, has been marred by controversy, including criticism over her responses to incidents such as the alleged murders of Luke Davis and Jesse Baird, linked to police officer Beau Lamarre.

In 2023, Webb refuted claims of a “cover-up” regarding the use of a taser on the 95-year-old Clare Nowland.
