Lawmakers from the House of Representatives questioned leaders from Berkeley, Georgetown University, and City University of New York regarding anti-Semitism in the final hearing on the matter since the October 7 attacks and the ensuing conflict in Gaza in 2023. The scrutinized universities included UC Berkeley, CUNY, and Georgetown University, with Republican lawmakers focusing on hiring practices, faculty unions, Middle East study centers, foreign funding, and DEI initiatives. Democrat lawmakers, however, denounced the hearing as “political theater” and criticized the Trump administration’s rollback of civil rights protections. During the hearing, university leaders from all three institutions denounced anti-Semitism, but tensions were high between Republican and Democratic representatives. The hearing also drew criticism from some who saw it as an attempt to defund higher education institutions.
