The Australian environment minister, Murray Watt, has announced plans to extend the operation of Woodside Energy’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) project on the Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia from 2030 to 2070. Watt stated that he intends to approve the life extension of the North West Shelf gas processing plant, subject to strict conditions regarding local air pollution levels. This decision has raised concerns among scientists and activists who are worried about the impact of increased emissions on a historic rock art site part of the Murujuga cultural landscape. They also fear that this could lead to up to 6 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions if the gas is burned overseas. More information on this development is expected to be announced soon.
