Mike Amesbury, the Member of Parliament for Runcorn and Helsby, has been sentenced to a 10-week prison term following his guilty plea to assault. The incident occurred after a night out in his constituency when Amesbury physically assaulted Paul Fellows, a 45-year-old man, on Main Street in Frodsham, Cheshire, on October 26th of last year. Video evidence captured by a CCTV camera showed Amesbury striking Fellows in the face, leading to his arrest by the police. The Labour party had suspended Amesbury following their investigation into the incident, and he admitted to the charge of section 39 assault in January. He was sentenced at Chester Magistrates Court, which could potentially trigger a by-election in his constituency, as this incident happened just 235 days after he was elected to office.
