A post on Ayers’ official Facebook page stated that his family mourns the loss, indicating his death on March 4th, 2025, in New York City due to a long illness. The family requested privacy but announced plans for a celebration of Ayers’ life.
Ayers was born in Los Angeles on September 10, 1940. He released his first album, West Coast Vibes, in 1963, and later formed the band Roy Ayers Ubiquity, which showcased his signature jazz-funk sound featuring the vibraphone—a skill inspired by jazz musician Lionel Hampton.
In 2017, Ayers discussed the creation of Everybody Loves the Sunshine, revealing its improvisational origin and summertime themes. Recorded on a hot summer day at Electric Lady studios in New York City, the song exuded a carefree vibe that resonated with audiences.
The track has been sampled over 100 times by artists like Mary J. Blige, Common, and Mos Def, and its success made Ayers a staple at international festivals. Despite his widespread influence, Ayers remained humble about his creation, asserting its universal appeal across generations.
Ayers’ career, marked by over a dozen albums before Everybody Loves the Sunshine, earned him the title “Godfather of Neo Soul.” His legacy will continue to inspire new generations of musicians and listeners alike.
