Linda Reynolds Calls for Apology from Katy Gallagher Over Perceived Impact of Brittany Higgins’ Claims on Australian Politics

Linda Reynolds made her final appearance before Senate estimates to demand an apology from Katy Gallagher for the personal harm caused by Labor’s scrutiny over Reynolds’ involvement in the alleged rape of Brittany Higgins. However, Gallagher, the federal finance minister, defended herself, stating that she acted within her rights in scrutinizing Reynolds and her office. Gallagher argued that other senators would have asked the same questions in similar circumstances.

Reynolds, who was the defense industry minister in 2019, came under heavy scrutiny after Higgins made public allegations of being raped by colleague Bruce Lehrmann in Reynolds’ Parliament House office. Gallagher was among those questioning Reynolds about what she knew about the incident and how her office responded. Reynolds was admitted to the hospital during the scrutiny, citing a heart condition, and Bruce Lehrmann denies the allegations.

During the Senate estimates hearing, Reynolds asked Gallagher for an apology not only to her but also to her staff and family for the damage inflicted. Gallagher, appearing surprised, replied that she had already addressed such questions in parliament and did not believe her actions constituted any wrongdoing. Reynolds persisted, and Gallagher refused to apologize, stating that her questions were reasonable and necessary. The debate escalated, causing a heated exchange between federal senators.
