An Indigenous man riding an e-bike was killed when a police car tried to pull him over in Sydney. The incident occurred around 3 am on Friday in Allen Street, Waterloo. According to NSW police assistant commissioner Peter McKenna, a single-unit acting sergeant attempted to pull over the 48-year-old man, which resulted in a collision. The man was treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene. His family members were contacted. McKenna denied any profiling due to the man’s Indigenous background. The reason for the pull-over will be investigated. The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission will monitor the police investigation. A crime scene was established, and police found over three ounces of methamphetamine and $10,000 in cash on the man. It is unclear if the acting sergeant was aware of this at the time. There is no vehicle or body-cam footage, so detectives are seeking CCTV footage. In a separate incident in Sydney’s west, a pedestrian carrying a baby died after being hit by a car, and the baby was taken to the hospital in critical condition. A 57-year-old man found with life-threatening injuries was treated by emergency services. The man carrying the baby, a 1-year-old, died at the scene. The baby was taken to Mount Druitt Hospital and transferred to Westmead Children’s Hospital. The driver, a 37-year-old woman, was taken to Mount Druitt Hospital for mandatory testing and is assisting police with inquiries. No charges have been made in regard to either fatality.
