Map apps and social networking platforms are accused of contributing to the highest number of mountain rescue operations ever recorded. | Mountaineering

Mountain rescue services have seen a record number of callouts in 2024, with a significant increase among young people aged 18-24, according to an analysis by Mountain Rescue England and Wales. This rise is linked to popular “honeypot” locations shared on social media and the increasing reliance on low-quality navigation apps. For the first time, mountain rescue teams were on call every day of the year in England and Wales, while Scotland recorded over 1,000 callouts for the first time. Origination of the problem includes the popularity of visually appealing sites on platforms like TikTok and Instagram and the lack of detail or offline functionality in many navigation apps.
