Mark Carney, the newly appointed Canadian Prime Minister, has announced his candidacy for election in the Ottawa riding of Nepean. This marks his first attempt to join parliament. Mr. Carney, the Liberal party’s candidate, will be running in the suburban district of Nepean, his hometown where he raised his family and dedicated his career to public service. He served as the head of Canada’s central bank and previously as its deputy. The 37-day election campaign for 343 House of Commons seats will determine which party will command a majority and form the next government, with the leader becoming prime minister. Mr. Carney succeeded Justin Trudeau, who resigned as prime minister in January but remains in power until the governing Liberal party elects a new leader.
