Hundreds of thousands of Australians are expected to participate in nationwide marches in support of the Palestinian cause, following the declaration of famine in Gaza for the first time. Organizers anticipate that Sunday’s demonstrations will be the largest pro-Palestine rallies in Australia’s history, with around 40 cities and towns participating. The marches, which call for sanctions and an end to Australia’s arms trade with Israel, are backed by over 250 community organizations and unions. Certain figures like Grace Tame, Antoinette Lattouf, and Henry Rajendra are scheduled to speak at the events. The UN has confirmed famine in parts of the Gaza Strip, and over 60,000 people have reportedly been killed in Gaza since the war commenced on October 7, 2023. Israel has rejected claims of genocide and termed the famine declaration as an “outright lie.” Inflation of the right to protest has been acknowledged even after the Stay Bridge protest was banned in Brisbane. The reports have been compiled with contributions from the Australian Associated Press.
