Reality TV star Matt Wright has been found guilty of two counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice following a deadly helicopter crash. However, a supreme court jury in Darwin failed to reach an agreement on a third count after a four-week trial. Wright, a star of the show “Outback Wrangler,” was accused of attempting to cover up evidence following the February 2022 crash that killed his co-star Chris “Willow” Wilson and left pilot Sebastian Robinson paraplegic. The jury could not reach a consensus on the third count, which involved Wright allegedly asking a friend to burn the helicopter’s maintenance release to prevent investigators from obtaining it.
The pair were on a crocodile-egg collecting mission in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory when the helicopter ran out of fuel, causing it to crash. Wright was accused of lying to crash investigators about the amount of fuel in the machine, of trying to get Robinson to falsify flying hours, and of requesting a friend to destroy the helicopter’s maintenance release. Despite the prosecution seeking his custody due to the severity of the offences, Wright was granted bail and will be sentenced on October 6.
