A statement released by his family announced Hurley’s “recent sudden passing,” though the cause of death remains unspecified. They added that as the “godfather of freak folk,” he had been a prolific and eccentric genius with a compassionate wit for over half a century. They expressed their deep mourning alongside fans and the music community for Hurley’s loss.
Born in 1941 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Hurley, the son of an operetta director, traveled extensively with his father during his childhood. His nomadic lifestyle persisted into his early adult years as he ventured into music. Once, while hitchhiking, Hurley was picked up by folklorist Fred Ramsey, who later produced Hurley’s debut album, First Songs, released on the prestigious Folkways label in 1964. The Smithsonian Folkways Recordings has paid tribute to him, acknowledging his wit and wild imagination as a guiding light for singers and songwriters.
Hurley spent time immersed in New York City’s thriving folk-revival scene, sharing the space with luminaries like Bob Dylan. However, he admitted to not being driven to climb the music industry ladder. He preferred performing at small gatherings and parties, enjoying the company of friends rather than the formalities of applying for gigs.
Throughout his career, Hurley juggled between various jobs and locations, including roles as a moccasin maker, carpenter, and apple picker, while still producing music. He released over 30 albums, many featuring his unique cover illustrations, which often included cartoon wolves. These eclectic records, ranging from straightforward folk to bluegrass and folk-rock, influenced numerous artists across US alternative music, including Lucinda Williams, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and Yo La Tengo.
Hurley’s latest album, The Time of the Foxgloves, released in 2021, marked his return to original songwriting after a 12-year hiatus. He had recently performed concerts in Tennessee and North Carolina.
Mike Quinn, the founder of No Quarter Records, mentioned that Hurley had just completed a new album, mastered the week before his passing. He expressed Hurley’s pride in the album and hopes for it to be released soon.
