Miguel Uribe, a Colombian senator and presidential hopeful for the 2026 election, was critically injured after being shot during a campaign event in Bogotá’s Fontibon district. The Democratic Centre party, to which Uribe belongs, firmly denounced the attack. The 39-year-old legislator, who is not connected to former president Alvaro Uribe, was known to be a conservative figure.
Initial reports from the party stated that armed individuals shot Uribe in the back while he was addressing supporters at a public park. Despite the gravity of the event, the party refrained from sharing further details regarding Uribe’s medical state.
Defence Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed the arrest of a suspect and initiated inquiries to determine if additional individuals were implicated. Sánchez also visited Uribe at the hospital.
Denouncing the violence, Colombia’s presidency pledged a comprehensive investigation and reiterated their abhorrence of the incident. Uribe originates from a notable family with ties to the Liberal party; his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was fatally shot during a botched rescue attempt by Pablo Escobar’s associates.
President Gustavo Petro offered condolences to Uribe’s family, expressing sympathy for their loss.
