National security advisor to Donald Trump, Michael Waltz, admitted responsibility for a group chat am error, which included a journalist and leaked sensitive information regarding planned airstrikes in Yemen.
Following Jeffrey Goldberg’s exposure as Atlantic’s editor in chief, wherein he was added to a group on Signal, a private messaging app, it was discovered that the chat included high-ranking officials discussing upcoming strikes on Yemen’s Houthis.
Goldberg, undisclosed in the group, overheard policy discussions and coordinated bombings, raising security concerns among critics.
Waltz defended himself against Fox News’s Laura Ingraham, attributing the oversight to a glitch while consulting with Elon Musk to resolve the issue.
Backlash and accusations of incompetence arose, with Senators Mark Warner and Chuck Schumer criticizing the lapse in security, and suggesting legal implications for the involved parties.
Despite the criticism, Trump defended Waltz and downplayed the severity of the leak.
