US representative Mikie Sherrill triumphed in the Democratic primary for governor of New Jersey, emerging victor from a crowded field of seasoned contenders thanks to her personal narrative as a naval pilot, former prosecutor, and ardent critic of Donald Trump.
Sherrill eclipsed five adversaries, among them a fellow member of the House, the mayors of the state’s two largest cities, a former notable state legislator, and the leading figure of the influential teacher’s union. She will now face the Republican nominee, Jack Ciattarelli, in the November general election.
Sherrill is now the standard-bearer for the Democratic party at a time when the party aims to secure a third consecutive term in the governorship and the national party seeks compelling leadership and a resonant message for voters.
New Jersey, alongside Virginia, is one of two states with a gubernatorial race this year, offering both parties a chance to trial strategies before the crucial midterm elections of the following year.
