Military aircraft accompany plane traveling from New York to Rome amid security issue | American news

On Sunday afternoon, an American Airlines flight traveling from New York to New Delhi safely landed in Rome after being diverted due to a security concern that was later deemed “non-credible” by the airline.

Although American Airlines provided no further details, NBC reported that the situation involved a bomb threat sent via email, citing a source close to the incident.

Following its arrival at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, American Airlines Flight 292 underwent an inspection by law enforcement and was cleared for departure.

According to NBC, the security threat was initially reported by the flight’s crew to the Federal Aviation Administration. American Airlines stated that an inspection was required before the flight could continue onwards to Delhi.

The flight will remain in Rome overnight to allow crew members to rest before continuing their journey to Delhi the following day.

An Associated Press reporter captured footage of fighter jets flying over the airport prior to the plane’s unexpected landing, as well as fire trucks present at the landing site after the plane arrived.

Passenger Neeraj Chopra stated that the pilot announced a change in “security status” approximately three hours before landing in New Delhi, causing the plane to turn back towards Rome.

Chopra, who was traveling from Detroit to visit family, described the initial reaction on the plane as calm but noted growing unease when the pilot later mentioned fighter jets escorting the plane to Rome.

Passenger Jonathan Bacon, originally from Dayton, Ohio, noticed the plane’s sharp turn away from New Delhi and towards Rome on a flight tracker displayed on the seatback in front of him.

Bacon mentioned limited internet access during the flight, with passengers only gaining access to early reports about the situation shortly before landing.

After landing, Bacon stated that all passengers were taken to the terminal by bus, where they and their personal belongings underwent additional security screenings that he described as “slightly heightened” and time-consuming. He also mentioned waiting for his checked baggage to undergo security screenings more than two hours after landing.

Bacon remarked that it was the longest flight to Europe he had ever taken.

An airport spokesperson confirmed that operations were proceeding as normal.
