Trade tariffs imposed on small, uninhabited Australian territories that do not have a trading relationship with the United States appear to have been based on incorrect trade data.
This data was partially related to shipments that were mistakenly labeled as originating from remote Norfolk Island, or Heard Island and McDonald Islands, instead of their actual countries of origin, as The Guardian has revealed.
Over the last five years, shipments from these territories have included aquarium systems, Timberland boots, wine, and recycling plant components.
A review of U.S. import data and shipping records indicates that multiple shipments were categorized as originating from Norfolk Island or Heard and McDonald Islands, despite the companies’ addresses, ports of departure for the shipment, and destination ports not being located in those territories.
