Narendra Modi stated that India has only temporarily halted its military actions against Pakistan and will retaliate when it sees fit, following a ceasefire that halted escalating hostilities between the two countries this weekend.
In his first public address since the conflict between India and Pakistan began, which culminated in both sides launching missiles at each other’s key military bases and airfields on Saturday, the Indian prime minister mentioned that he is closely monitoring Pakistan’s actions.
Donald Trump announced the cessation of hostilities between the two nations on Saturday, dispelling fears of all-out war for the first time in decades.
India initiated the attack on Pakistan on Wednesday as a response to a fatal militant attack in April in Indian-administered Kashmir, which India blames on Pakistan-supported terror groups. The conflict escalated into a series of drone and missile strikes by both sides, and deadly shelling along the disputed border dividing Kashmir.
Both Trump and Pakistani officials credited the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and the vice-president, JD Vance, with facilitating peace negotiations between the two nations, following hours of intense discussions with India and Pakistan.
Although Modi did not speak about the US’s role in the ceasefire, he maintained that Pakistan first approached India’s head of military operations on Saturday for a ceasefire and that Pakistan had sought assistance from the international community.
