Kooyong MP Monique Ryan has apologized after a video showed her husband, Peter Jordan, removing a campaign sign for Ryan’s Liberal challenger from outside a Melbourne home. The incident prompted the Australian Electoral Commission to warn political candidates about the importance of civility during campaigning. Jordan admitted to making a mistake and removing the sign, which belonged to the Liberal candidate, Amelia Hamer. He also stated that he believed the sign was placed on public land but should have reported his concerns to the council. Ryan defended her seat against Hamer’s challenge and stated that all concerns about signage should be reported to the council. Senator James Paterson called the incident totally appropriate and inexcusable behavior. The Liberal party is looking to win back the Kooyong seat, which Monroe lost to Ryan in 2022. The AEC said they were aware of the footage but stated that they do not regulate signage placement beyond restrictions on how close signs can be installed to polling places.
