An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale hit Myanmar, prompting hundreds of people to leave swaying buildings in Bangkok, the capital of neighboring Thailand, more than 1,400 kilometers away. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was shallow and occurred at a depth of just 10 kilometers with its epicenter near Mandalay, approximately 50 kilometers east of Monywa. There have been no immediate reports of damage in Myanmar, which is experiencing chaos following a coup in 2021. Residents in central Bangkok, a densely populated area home to over 17 million people, fled high-rise condominiums and hotels as the ground trembled. Some high-rise pools even had water slosh out of them during the tremor. “I was sleeping at home and could feel the earthquake. I rushed out of the building in my pajamas as soon as I heard it,” Duangjai, a resident of the tourist city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, said to AFP.
