Naked Sundays, an Australian cosmetics firm, is putting a hold on sunscreen sales in order to verify the accuracy of its SPF claims, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs.

Sun care company Naked Sundays has halted sales of its SPF50+ Collagen Glow Mineral Sunscreen in Australia due to concerns over the accuracy of its sun protection claims. This decision follows similar actions by other brands in the industry, including Ultra Violette, which recently pulled its Lean Screen Skinscreen product from shelves due to inconsistent SPF results reported by consumer advocacy group Choice.

Choice had tested 20 sunscreens with SPF 50 or 50+ labels and found that 16 of them did not meet their claimed protection levels. The investigation has raised questions about the effectiveness and regulation of sunscreen in Australia.

Naked Sundays stated that it has been conducting its own testing and due diligence following the Choice report and has received numerous customer inquiries regarding the Collagen Glow sunscreen. The company plans to wait for additional independent testing results before resuming sales of the product in Australia. They have maintained that their US version of the sunscreen meets the SPF50 claims and will be available for purchase there.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which oversees the regulation of therapeutics in Australia, is considering new testing methods for sunscreen SPF claims that may provide more reliable results. Naked Sundays assured that the pause in sales applies only to the Collagen Glow Mineral sunscreen and not to any other products in their lineup.

Mecca, a major beauty retailer in Australia, confirmed that they would be removing all sizes of the affected SPF50+ Collagen Glow 100% Mineral Perfecting Priming Lotion from their shelves immediately, in coordination with Naked Sundays. Mecca has assured customers that they can receive a full refund for the product affected and that no other Naked Sundays items have been impacted.
