Narrow Escape at Reagan National Airport: Delta Plane and Military Aircraft Encounter

A passenger flight getting ready to depart near Washington DC and an incoming US military jet were told to change course to avoid a possible collision on Friday, officials stated. This occurrence happened at Ronald Reagan Washington National airport, two months after a passenger jet and a US army helicopter crashed near the airport, killing all 67 people on board both aircraft. In response to the earlier crash on January 29, federal investigators suggested prohibiting certain helicopter flights in the area. On Friday, Delta Air Lines Flight 2983 was cleared for departure at Reagan airport around 3:15 PM, simultaneously, four US air force T-38 Talon aircraft were flying in, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The jets were heading for a flyover of Arlington National Cemetery when the Delta flight was alerted about an aircraft nearby. The FAA confirmed that air traffic controllers gave corrective instructions to both aircraft and plans to investigate the incident. The flight, carrying 131 passengers, two pilots, and three flight attendants, was scheduled for a routine trip between Reagan and Minneapolis-St Paul international airport. The flight departed at 2:55 PM but had to reroute following instructions from air traffic control. The rubble from LiveATC.net captured the pilot inquiring about an aircraft below their plane while departing. Air traffic control confirmed the presence of another aircraft. No injuries were reported. The T-38 Talon is described on the air force’s website as a twin-engine, high-altitude, supersonic jet trainer utilized by multiple departments, including NASA, for pilot training and other purposes.
