A strain of mold is affecting museums in Denmark including the National Museum and Skagens Museum. The mold, “aspergillus section restricti,” has the potential of damaging the cultures and paintings within Denmark’s museum collections, as well as being a health risk to visitors. The mold prefers dry environments and can be difficult to detect as it is invisible. Expressing concerns of the mold being a worldwide phenomenon, preliminary studies are underway at 150 other cultural sites in Denmark to protect their cultural heritage. The Danish Museums Association is waiting for further research to find a solution to the problem as it’s still unknown what the humidity level needs to be to stop this mold from growing.
