New pedestrian walkway linking Cooks River and Sydney Harbour aims to be completed by 2025 | Mobility Network

A 6km bicycle and pedestrian path that will run along a 100-year-old rail corridor and connect two of Sydney’s most popular waterside walks is expected to open later this year. The Minns government announced on Friday that the GreenWay, which stretches north from the Cooks River in Earlwood through the inner west to the Bay Run on Parramatta River at Iron Cove, is currently 80% complete. The GreenWay project, valued at $60 million, will intersect with the south-west Metro line, set for completion in 2026. According to NSW Premier Chris Minns, both projects will “revolutionise transport” in the city’s inner west and connect communities that previously lacked the ability to travel via walking, cycling, or public transport.

The GreenWay is set to feature parks and foreshores, playgrounds, sporting facilities, bushcare sites, public art, cafes, and cultural and historical sites. It mostly follows the route of the inner west light rail and Hawthorne Canal, requiring the construction of underpasses and tunnels beneath major roads to create continuous paths. Among the final sections to be completed are the Hercules parklands and the New Canterbury Road underpass. The project originally came from community advocates in the inner west and has been a 20-year vision of the local community.

Inner West Council mayor Darcy Byrne stated that the project will transform the way people move around and that it will provide a center for public art with 10 major public artworks to be placed along its length. He also noted that the metro will provide fast rail every four minutes, which will encourage more sustainable modes of transportation such as scooters, bikes, and walking.
