Nigel Farage announces plans for Reform UK to receive bitcoin donations.

Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, has announced its acceptance of donations in the form of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. This unprecedented move was revealed by Farage during his appearance at the Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas, where he was introduced as a potential UK presidential candidate. Speaking at the event, Farage stated that Reform UK is the first political party in Britain to offer donation options in cryptocurrency, explaining that eligible UK donors can now contribute through these digital means.

Farage also outlined the party’s plan to introduce a cryptoassets and digital finance bill aimed at reducing capital gains tax on cryptoassets from 24% to 10%, positioning the UK as a leading “crypto powerhouse.” As part of this legislation, Farage proposed a “bitcoin digital reserve” to be established within the Bank of England. Additionally, the bill would make it unlawful for banks to “debank” customers who engage with cryptocurrency transactions.

Reform UK updated its website on Thursday to accommodate cryptocurrency donations, adding a disclaimer to confirm adherence to Electoral Commission rules and the prohibition on anonymous donations.

In his address at the conference, Farage hailed the acceptance of political donations via cryptocurrency as “innovative,” praising America for its forward-looking stance on digital assets. He directed a message to the British public, especially the youth, encouraging their support to bring the country into the 21st century by recognizing the permanence of crypto and digital assets.

Farage also criticized the current Labour government and previous Conservative administration for their inaction regarding cryptocurrencies, noting a single speech by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the topic and the lack of private business experience among Labour’s cabinet members.

A Reform UK spokesperson confirmed the party’s acceptance of cryptocurrency donations, stating that further details would be unveiled the following day. The party’s structure, listed on Companies House, reveals it is a private company with majority control held by its leader and operates differently from other parties, functioning as a not-for-profit entity with just two members and directors: Farage and Zia Yusuf.
