Anthony Olubunmi George, a 63-year-old man from Nigeria who has been in the UK for nearly 40 years, has won an appeal to remain in the country, despite the Home Office’s attempt to deport him. George, who arrived in the UK in 1986, had no criminal record and experienced two strokes in 2019 that resulted in speech and mobility issues. Over the years, he has faced homelessness and no longer has close family ties in Nigeria. Despite his difficult circumstances, George expressed joy over the court’s decision, saying it has given him a new beginning. His immigration issues were complicated by his previous solicitors, who submitted a forged entry stamp in his passport and have since been reported to the authorities. The Home Office had initially dismissed George’s applications for a stay, suggesting he could visit him in Nigeria. However, the immigration judge acknowledged George’s lack of proper legal representation and his distress, which contributed to his health issues. George’s current lawyer, Naga Kandiah, emphasized the significance of this decision after decades of uncertainty and poor legal representation.
