On Saturday, multiple wildfires erupted in North and South Carolina, leading to evacuation orders. These incidents happened during a period of dry and windy conditions across the south-east, which significantly increase the risk and spread of wildfires.
In Polk County, North Carolina, a fire spreading over 400 to 500 acres forced the establishment of an emergency shelter, affecting areas between Tryon and Saluda, approximately 40 miles south of Asheville. This blaze was reportedly ignited by a downed power line on US Highway 176 and quickly escalated, endangering local structures. Both Tryon and Saluda fire departments, along with aid from various neighboring counties and the North Carolina forest service, fought the fire, which had not been contained as of Saturday night.
Across the border in South Carolina, a brush fire broke out in Carolina Forest, just west of Myrtle Beach, prompting Horry County rescue fire to conduct evacuations early Sunday morning. In response to the wildfire threat, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster issued a statewide burn ban on Saturday night. In his statement, he highlighted the dedication of first responders and firefighters who are battling multiple fires across the state, emphasizing their critical and dangerous roles in containing the blazes.
