Heavy snow is falling in the northern tablelands of New South Wales while rain is affecting other parts of the state. The NSW SES issued 28 warnings for residents in Coffs Coast, Mid North Coast, Upper Hunter, and New England on Saturday afternoon. rainfall totals of 65 to 100 mm are expected, with isolated falls of up to 130 mm possible. Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan stated that heavy and persistent rain could lead to some roads becoming flooded and dangerous. The SES is warning the community to never drive, walk, or play in floodwater and to avoid traveling in the affected areas.
The rain has caused rivers to rise, resulting in moderate flooding along the Peel River at Tamworth and the Namoi River at Gunnedah. Unusual snow levels have been reported in Armidale and Guyra, with falls of up to 50 cm possible. Black ice poses a significant risk and is causing dangerous road conditions throughout the northern tablelands. The SES has pre-positioned road crash crews to respond to any rescues and is urging the community to avoid unnecessary travel.
They also advise that if you must be on the roads in snowy areas, you should drive with caution, use brakes gently, and drive slowly. Additionally, the weather forecast includes damaging wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h and large, powerful surf. Over 1,000 NSW SES volunteers have been deployed across the state, responding to over 750 calls for assistance since the bad weather started.
