A senior New South Wales police officer was required to sign a non-disclosure agreement after being informed by the federal police in early February that the motive behind the alleged mastermind of Sydney’s caravan plot was to sway prosecutions. This revelation was made during an upper house inquiry into the knowledge of Premier Chris Minns and his cabinet regarding the caravan laden with explosives discovered in January near Sydney, which was later deemed not to be a terrorism event, but a plot by organized crime to redirect police resources and negotiate for reduced sentences. The inquiry was prompted by concerns over potential parliamentary misdirection prior to the enactment of controversial hate speech legislation in late February. At the hearing, NSW Deputy Commissioner David Hudson stated that state police had repeatedly requested this information from the Australian Federal Police, but was unable to obtain it due to internal policies. He further revealed that a senior investigating officer was informed on or around the 10th of February but had to sign a non-disclosure agreement. The AFP’s Deputy Commissioner Krissy Barrett later confirmed that the caravan was a “fake terrorism plot” intended to seek changes to criminal status, with the mastermind maintaining a distance and enlisting local criminals to carry out the plan.
