NSW Floods: Over 800 Homes Demolished; Damage Evaluation Ongoing | New South Wales

The flooding in New South Wales has worsened, with the number of homes destroyed doubling to nearly 800. This comes as recovery teams continue assessing the damage on the state’s mid-north coast. Damage assessments have been conducted on more than 5,000 homes, with nearly 800 deemed uninhabitable, a State Emergency Service spokesperson disclosed. This figure is expected to rise.

At the height of the disaster, 50,000 people were isolated, with more than 10,000 still cut off in the region. The situation was marked with tragedy, as five people lost their lives due to the flooding.

Conditions are forecast to improve starting Wednesday, after damaging winds hit several flood-affected communities. Notwithstanding these challenges, efforts are ongoing to support affected residents, including providing aid through drones to isolated farms and conducting welfare checks.

Community support has been highlighted as crucial, as local residents struggle to cope with their mud-covered possessions. The crisis has prompted federal and state natural disaster recovery efforts, including financial support for impacted businesses. However, concerns have been raised about the adequacy of this support, with calls for more substantial assistance for farmers. Additionally, there have been incidents of alleged looting, which authorities have strongly condemned as unbecoming of the community’s spirit.
