NSW MP Alex Greenwich Claims Mark Latham Has a Pattern of Abusive Fixation towards Him in Tribunal Testimony

A tribunal has been presented with the case of a controversial politician’s continuous harassment and abuse towards a fellow MP. NSW independent MP Alex Greenwich is pursuing a legal battle against former federal Labor leader Mark Latham for homosexual vilification and workplace harassment. The allegations arise from a sexually explicit tweet that was previously ruled as defamatory by the Federal Court, as well as subsequent public appearances by Latham. In a passionate statement, Greenwich attested that the tweet aimed to portray him as a “disgusting sexual act” and a threat to children. He also claimed that the harassment began with the tweet and hasn’t ceased, and that he has been relentlessly targeted for who he is and his sexuality. Greenwich further asserted that after the tweet and subsequent interviews, his office was swamped with abuse. Although he has experienced homophobic abuse in the past as an openly gay MP, he emphasizes that he has never before been defined as a repulsive sex act by someone. Latham interrupted the proceedings from the public gallery, prompting a warning from a senior tribunal member. In 2024, Greenwich was awarded $140,000 in damages in a Federal Court suit against Latham. The suit was filed in response to Latham’s tweet, sent after the state election, which depicted a sex act in explicit terms. This followed an online feud between the two, which was initiated by violent protests outside a church in Sydney’s southwest in March 2023. Approximately 250 counter-protesters physically attacked police and 15 members of the LGBTQI community. Greenwich’s lawyer Prue Bindon argued that recent tweets from Latham have subjected her client to further public hatred and ridicule. After Latham’s lawyer objected to these tweets being formally entered as evidence, Latham complained about “another whinge-athon from the European prince,” referring to Greenwich’s links to Georgian nobility. Latham has been involved in several controversies, including taking photos of women MPs without their consent, for which he has already apologized. A recent attempt to have the oldest parliamentary chamber officially censure him in Australia failed after the coalition opposition, the Greens, and minor party MPs chose to adjourn the motion until October. Latham defended his actions by stating that no court or tribunal should limit the legal and authentic freedom of speech of an elected member of parliament.
