A growing call for an inquiry into whether New South Wales Premier, Chris Minns, and his police minister misled MPs and the public about controversial hate speech and religious worship bills has emerged. In February, NSW Labor passed reforms targeting antisemitism amid a wave of arson and graffiti attacks culminating in an explosives-laden caravan found on Sydney’s outskirts. Despite the caravan incident and 14 other antisemitic events in the city being orchestrated by organized crime figures for personal gain, not driven by an antisemitic motive, critics argue the government acted too swiftly, using misleading language to pass laws that curtail democratic freedoms and foster fear-based agendas. The legislation, which criminalizes making racist remarks in public and grants police broad powers to restrict protests near places of worship, has faced fierce criticism, including calls for either a legislative inquiry or the laws’ repeal.
