New South Wales police are investigating an alleged Islamophobic social media comment targeting Lakemba mosque in Sydney’s west, with the state premier calling it “truly disgusting.” The comment referenced the 2019 terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, where 51 worshippers were killed during prayers. It was posted on a video the mosque shared on TikTok, which showed worshippers leaving during Ramadan. The mosque responded, stating that this is not just online hate, but a sign of unchecked racism that could lead to tragedy. They demanded protection, respect, and the right to live without fear. Recently, a similar online threat was made against the Australian Islamic House in Edmondson Park, which is also being investigated by the police. The Lebanese Muslim Association, which operates Lakemba mosque, referred the threat to the police. NSW Premier Chris Minns condemned the threat, saying it is “disgusting” and has no place in NSW. The multiculturalism minister, Steve Kamper, also expressed serious concern and emphasized the importance of feeling safe and protected. The government and NSW police are investigating the matter, showing no tolerance for such acts.
