In Tel Aviv, a significant demonstration took place, drawing tens of thousands of participants who are urging for an end to the conflict in Gaza and the liberation of hostages. This marks one of the largest protests in Israel since the conflict began in October 2023.
The evening rally, which was the culmination of a nationwide strike, showcased a unified demand from the populace for the government to stop its military operations. Shouting slogans such as “Bring them all home! Stop the war!” the crowd joined at Hostage Square, a central point for protest activities throughout the conflict.
The Hostage and Missing Families Forum, which spearheaded the protests, estimated around 500,000 attendees, a number that has not been confirmed by the police. Speakers at the event, like Einav Zangauker, whose son is one of the hostages, insisted on the need for a comprehensive and viable agreement and the cessation of the war.
Video messages from hostages, showing their dire conditions and longing for their families, were played during the demonstration, adding emotional weight to the calls for their release. Protestors across the country demonstrated their resolve by blocking roads, engaging in confrontations with the police, and setting fire to tires, leading to over 30 arrests.
Critics of a potential prisoner exchange with Hamas, such as Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, condemned the protests, labeling them as “perverse” and as playing into the hands of Hamas. In contrast, opposition leaders like Benny Gantz accused the government of attacking hostage families and being responsible for the prolonged captivity.
Egyptian mediated negotiations are ongoing to secure a 60-day truce that includes the release of hostages, following inconclusive talks in Qatar. Israel’s military actions have resulted in the deaths of at least 61,000 Palestinians, the majority being civilians, according to the Gaza health ministry.
