More than 70 individuals evacuated from a town in East Sussex have yet to return home after explosive chemicals were found in a property.
A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of manufacturing and possessing an explosive substance with the intention of unlawful use, following a police callout to the A259 Marina in St Leonards on Thursday.
A major incident was declared on Friday as an operation continued to neutralize the chemicals, with 73 people needing to find temporary accommodation in a nearby hotel.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team confirmed the chemicals posed a threat to life, according to the authorities.
Sussex police released an update on Saturday morning, dispelling speculation that the incident was linked to large-scale drug production or terrorism. They expressed gratitude to those affected and the public for their patience.
A spokesperson for Sussex police clarified that the incident is still ongoing as authorities work with partners to secure the area. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team desensitized the chemicals on Friday afternoon and is conducting a thorough search for any additional hazardous materials.
They stated that public safety is the top priority and the 100-meter cordon remains in place. Residents will be allowed to return home once the area is deemed safe, acknowledging the unsettling nature of the situation for the displaced individuals.
Additionally, the spokesperson mentioned that updates regarding the upcoming Hastings half marathon, scheduled for Sunday along the road, will be provided as soon as possible.
Chief Inspector James Scott emphasized the ongoing nature of the incident and the priority of keeping people safe. He confirmed that the chemicals are not part of a large-scale drug operation and the incident is not believed to be terrorist-related.
