Next Tuesday, film director Oliver Stone plans to appear as a witness at a hearing organized by the US House of Representatives. The hearing will focus on the thousands of newly released documents, related to President John F Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, at the direction of President Donald Trump.
Representative Anna Paulina Luna, the chair of the Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, stated that the hearing’s purpose is to assess the significance of these documents. Luna also emphasized that this task force will thoroughly investigate these JFK files, consult with experts, and interview surviving members of the investigative committees to unravel this mystery and share the findings with the public.
In January, Trump issued an executive order during his second term, instructing national intelligence and other officials to devise a plan for the full release of all records associated with President Kennedy’s assassination. The Kennedy assassination collection in the National Archives holds over 6 million pages of records, with the majority having been declassified and made available to the public before Trump’s order.
There is ongoing debate regarding Kennedy’s murder, which has been attributed to Lee Harvey Oswald as the lone gunman. Stone’s 1991 film ‘JFK’ faced strong criticism from historians for suggesting that Kennedy’s death was a result of high-level conspiracies. Stone himself believes that certain elements within the US intelligence community were involved.
The Justice Department and other federal agencies have reaffirmed in the following decades that Oswald acted alone in the assassination. However, polls have shown that many Americans continue to suspect a conspiracy.
Other witnesses scheduled to testify include journalist and author Jefferson Morley and author James DiEugenio. Morley mentioned on social media that he will discuss the CIA’s pre-assassination file on Oswald during the hearing.
Trump had previously committed to increasing transparency regarding Kennedy’s death during his campaign.
