Ontario imposes a 25% penalty on energy exports to the U.S. in response to Trump’s tariffs | Canada

The Canadian province of Ontario has imposed a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota in response to Donald Trump’s tariffs, as announced by Premier Doug Ford on Monday. Ford argues that Trump’s tariffs are detrimental to the US economy and will increase expenses for American families and businesses. Ontario will continue to oppose the threat of tariffs and use all available means to safeguard the province. In addition, Ford has halted a $100m contract with Starlink, a satellite service owned by Elon Musk, who has been a Trump advisor, leaving some remote communities without alternative options for internet access. Ontario has also removed US alcohol, including Jack Daniel’s whiskey, from its shelves in protest against Trump’s tariffs, which he has threatened against Mexico and other traditional allies of the US.
