Measures aimed at blocking companies involved in forced labor from receiving public funds in the state-owned Great British Energy supply chain may be overturned this week. Labor MPs are urged to reject a clause inserted into the energy bill in the House of Lords in February. However, Labor MP Alex Sobel is proposing an amendment to empower the independent anti-slavery commissioner to assess evidence of forced labor. This move has the support of the anti-slavery commissioner Eleanor Lyons but raises concerns in the Foreign Office, which seeks to improve relations with China. The rejection of slave-made goods and the need to address forced labor in the renewable sector are highlighted as crucial for reducing dependence on China and promoting human rights.
